Beaches & Walking Trails

Dolphins and pelicans frequent the riverfront, and the subtropical climate warms the shallow waters of the Urunga lagoon, creating a tranquil swimming pool for year round enjoyment. The open expanse of beaches north of Mylestom and south of Urunga hold a place for everyone to find his or her own place in the sun.

Enjoy walks through the variety of parks and state forests, along creeks and rivers, or through the picturesque heritage towns.

HUNGRY HEAD BEACH

Miles and miles of unspoiled sand. Stroll the Urunga boardwalk to the sand dunes and relax on the beach and let the sun, sand and surf recharge your batteries. Visit the local art and craft shops and meet the artists at Urunga and Hungry Head.

Beach Safety Professional lifeguards are on duty at Hungry Head Beach every day throughout school holidays. Volunteer lifeguards are also on patrol from 24th September through to 29th April on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays between 9am and 1pm.

From Urunga, make your way to the boardwalk and go east until you get your feet wet.
From the Pacific Highway, follow Tourist Route 16 til you see the Hungry Head parking signs.

NORTH BEACH

The peaceful townships of Repton and Mylestom provide more opportunities for the visitor to experience the coastal atmosphere of the Bellinger. Bongil Bongil National Park offers countless walking tracks. Watch for koalas in the tall eucalypt forest, keep an eye out for hunting ospreys, and make friends with the friendly local wallabies.

Mylestom foreshore has your family boating holiday covered, with two public boat ramps, a park with shelters, BBQ’s, picnic tables, toilets, playground and a river lido for the kids. North Beach is patrolled in the summer months and Tucker’s Rock to the north is a great walk but if you want to swim, watch out for rips.

4WDs are permitted on certain sections of the beach, but please remember that beaches are very sensitive ecosystems so keep off any vegetation – or better still, use the car park provided.
